Lip fillers are a popular cosmetic treatment designed to enhance the shape, volume, and definition of the lips. They provide a plumper appearance, smooth fine lines, and restore lost volume due to aging.
Most modern lip fillers contain hyaluronic acid (HA), a naturally occurring substance in the body that helps retain moisture and keep skin hydrated. HA fillers are preferred because they are safe, reversible, and provide a natural feel.
How Long Do Lip Fillers Last?
Lip fillers typically last between 6 to 12 months , depending on factors such as metabolism, lifestyle, and the type of filler used. Over time, the body naturally breaks down the filler.
Enhance volume and shape
Define the lip border (Cupid’s bow)
Smooth out fine lines (smoker’s lines)
Improve lip symmetry
Provide a hydrated, youthful look
When performed by a qualified professional, lip fillers are considered safe. Common side effects include mild swelling, bruising, and tenderness, which subside within a few days. The procedure is also reversible if needed using hyaluronidase, an enzyme that dissolves HA fillers.
LIP FILLER GUIDELINES
Before your treatment
The day before & the day of, please do not drink alcohol, take aspirin or ibuprofen, these will thin the blood, making you more susceptible to bruising & swelling.
Take paracetamol one hour before your appointment (not aspirin or ibuprofen) to help with additional pain relief.
At your appointment Helen will discuss with you, your requirements & answer any questions or worries you may have. Helen will apply a topical numbing cream. Once numbed your lips will be fully cleaned and prepped.
During the procedure
The thinnest needles are used & changed throughout the procedure to keep it as comfortable as possible, doing this also causes less trauma to the tissues, not changing the needle will cause more bruising & swelling.
The dermal filler used also contains lidocaine this will further numb your lips during the procedure.
After the procedure
After the procedure you will be given an aftercare sheet to take home. It is important you follow the aftercare for smooth healing & less downtime.
Immediately after the procedure there will be swelling. Swelling normally last two to three days and full results are seen at two weeks.
Not all clients bruise, but it is normal as the lips are full of little vessels. Arnica cream & or Arnica tablets are the best solution for bruising.
Once the swelling has subsided you may feel that you should have gone bigger. Your lips will only take a certain amount of dermal filler at one time this could be 0.5ml up to 1ml, over filling will cause migration or worse a dermal filler compromise (filler pressing on an artery).
The key to building fuller lips is layering sensibly over two or more sessions.
Dermal filler added to virgin lips or lips with fully dissolved previous filler will settle and will integrate with your tissues, the results will be subtle. You are building a foundation. Some clients are happy with the subtle results after one session and love them.
If however you loved the swelling from the lip filler and wish they had stayed more like this then two or more sessions will give fuller longer lasting results.
If it is your first time it is always best to only book one session at a time to see how your lips respond. Most of my clients are happy with that one session and come back 6 to 12 months later for a top up. If, however you want more you can book back from one month later.
Lip filler can last 3 to 12 months. The guide is so wide due to the fact everyone’s anatomy and metabolism is completely different. 0.8ml will settle, completely different in everyone. Your skin, underlying tissue quality & metabolism all play a large part in how your body responds.
External & internal factors all play a role. Internal is your metabolism, it is your metabolism that naturally dissolves the filler over time. Dermal filler is made from hyaluronic acid, this is found naturally within your tissues. Like your own hyaluronic acid your body will also metabolise dermal filler. Having a higher metabolism naturally will mean your body will dissolve the dermal filler quicker.
You can help with external influences by wearing a high protection sun protection on your lips when out in the sun & drinking more water.
