Anti-wrinkle treatments
With both age & repetitive muscle movement, lines settle into the face & are visible even at rest. Its these static lines that make your face look tired & fatigued. By softening these lines & wrinkles, your face looks fresher, more youthful & relaxed.
Botulinum toxin (Botox) injections improve appearance by relaxing muscles that cause wrinkles. By blocking nerve signals to muscles. As a result , injected muscles can not contract, these effects are always temporary, but can last for several months. Full results are seen at two weeks.
Some areas that can be treated are forehead, between brows, crows feet, marionettes & neck bands. Anti-wrinkle injections are amazing at smoothing out wrinkles & preventing more from forming in that area, however unlike dermal fillers, they cannot plump the skin & add volume to the face.
Dermal fillers
Injectable dermal fillers are one of the most popular anti-ageing treatments among women & men, second only to neurotoxin treatments such as Botox.
Dermal fillers are safe, FDA approved & versatile, & they are a perfect addition to your skin care routine. Dermal fillers are based on a compound called hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring molecule found in practically all living creatures, can bind water & function as a natural lubricant & shock absorber in movable bodily components like joints. It is also necessary for nutrient delivery & controlling water balance in the skin. Dermal fillers rejuvenate & add volume to the skin, rapidly minimising the appearance of lines & wrinkles & creating a natural, softer look by increasing the skins supply of hyaluronic acid, collagen & elastin.
Dermal fillers are injectable gels consisting of non-animal hyaluronic acid stabilized. The gel is gentle on the skin & closely matches the hyaluronic acid found naturally within the body. Dermal fillers made from hyaluronic acid are biodegradable & fully biocompatible with human hyaluronic acid.
Overtime, your body will simply break down the hyaluronic acid molecules & eliminates them just as it does our own hyaluronic acid.
Dermal fillers have made remarkable advances over the years, they are now safer then ever & have enabled us to target specific trouble spots with greater skill & artistry, providing you with beautiful natural results, they are ideal for a myriad of different concerns be it, loss of volume & structure, deep wrinkles & folds or fine lines.
Different dermal fillers come in different molecular sizes. The difference in size mean that dermal fillers, while achieving a similar goal, behave a bit differently from on another.
Types of hyaluronic acid dermal filler (for facial treatments)
Sub q has a large molecule size. Named “sub q” due to the fact it needs to be injected subcutaneous at a deeper level.
These thicker dermal fillers are ideal for contouring & adding structure back where it has depleted, be it bone, muscle, fat or collagen.
Your practitioner must understand ageing & anatomy. Sub q will last approximately 12 to 18 months.
Deep has a medium molecular size. Deep is injected into the dermal layers, & is amazing for nasolfolds, marionettes & deeper wrinkles. Deep can also be used in lips. Deep will last up to 9 to 12 months.
Fine has a small molecular size. Fine is injected more superficially & treats finer lines & wrinkles, these types of fillers are ideal for tear trough, temples, mid face rejuvenation (using a cannula & mesh technique) upper lip lines & anywhere on the face with fine wrinkles. Fine is also perfect for lips, giving the practitioner more control over shaping & lifting then the deeper dermal fillers. Fine will last up to 6 to 9 months.
How dermal filler is metabolised.
Dermal filler is naturally metabolised by your body. Different circumstances will affect the longevity of dermal filler. Your metabolism is one of the main factors, people with a higher metabolism will naturally dissolve the dermal filler quicker, as is the size of the molecule (as explained above) & area treated. Lips have the least longevity as it is a very active part of the face, talking & eating will break down filler quicker. Whereas cheek & tear trough filler will last much longer.
Some injectable fillers are permanent or can only be dissolved naturally by the body.
The good news is hyaluronic acid dermal fillers can also be dissolved immediately with hyaluronidase an injectable dissolver.
Why would you dissolve dermal filler you may ask? Peace of mind. Knowing if you did not like it, it is reversible.
Lip migration & lumps, these are normally delayed reactions. They can be the bodies natural reaction to dermal filler, which is rare. But if dermal filler is injected incorrectly this can also happen.
Hyaluronidase is also used to treat complications caused by the dermal filler blocking an artery, called an occlusion. An occlusion is where the dermal filler has been injected into an artery causing the blood supply to be compromised, if not treated this will cause necrosis. This is why choosing an experienced practitioner is so important, one who has extensive anatomy knowledge & knows the correct depths to inject & is complications trained.
Not only is Helen Whitehouse at Whitehouse aesthetics trained by a medical doctor at Harley street, she also invests in yearly courses in anatomy & complications.
Although occlusions are rare it is important anyone that is undergoing dermal filler treatment are fully aware of all dermal filler complications & side effects & have been given aftercare instructions.
How to improve the longevity of dermal filler?
Drinking plenty of water, dehydration will cause the body to metabolise the dermal filler quicker. Drinking of plenty water will also increase The dermal fillers ability to maintain moisture within the tissues.
Reduce sun exposure by wearing a hat & sun block.
Use retinol-based skin care products to kick start your skins natural collagen production.
Take collagen supplements, look for a high strength supplement to boost your own collagen.
Be gentle on your face, firm massages & facials with pressure will decrease the longevity.
